If the kitten learns cleanliness from his mother during the first weeks of his life, it is not uncommon for the ball of hair to be allowed to go to the 4 corners of the house rather than in his litter when he arrives in his new family. But then, how can you train a kitten to cleanliness?

Training your cat how to use litter is therefore often the first thing your humans need to do. But rest assured, just a little patience to educate a cat to cleanliness and get used to litter.

  • Choose a tray and litter
  • Where to install litter in his house/apartment?
  • Patience to accustom your cat to the litter
  • My cat does not go to bed, should I punish him?
  • Pheromones to help your cat

Let’s dive in

1. Choose a tray and litter

To start, it is important to choose a tray and litter. Think again if you think any model will do the trick! Some cats refuse to do their needs when the tray is not deep enough because they do not feel safe.

The cottage litter box is a good solution, because, in addition to providing a comfortable and private place to the cat, it is more hygienic and avoids ending up with litter scattered throughout the room.

Mineral, clumping or plant? For the litter itself, the choice is not apparent. Maybe you will have to test several before finding the one that suits your cat. A tomcat can refuse to do his bedding if he does not like it. It is he who will have the last word!

Learning about cleanliness is an important step, even for a kitten! To help your little cat do the litter and become clean and self-sufficient, invest in suitable equipment and bedding that suits his preferences.

You may have to try several before finding the right one, which is why it is worth going through e-commerce sites to pay for less expensive litter. You can opt for brands like PetSafe, Siria, Vitakraft, Ami Confort or Iris Ohyama which are among the most sought after. The choice is yours!

2. Where to install litter in his house/apartment?

The cat needs tranquility and is a very clean animal. The litter must not be installed in a transit area or near sleeping and eating places.

And if you have several cats, you will need several litters, placed in different places of the house.

 3. Patience to accustom your cat to the litter

Once the bedding is chosen and installed, the learning phase can begin! Put down your kitten, who may know instantly what use to make. If not, take his front paws to reproduce his scratching movements.

Remember to install the cat in its tray regularly, especially after meals.

4. My cat does not go to bed, should I punish him?

If your cat is forgotten in the house, there is no point in punishing him, especially if you do not take it for granted, because he will not understand what is happening.

If you catch him in the act, take the cat in your arms and drop him in the litter. Otherwise, simply move his droppings into the litter so that he understands that this is where he has to go.

A kitten who sniffs the floor and looks for intimacy is probably about to go to bed. So it’s time to bring him to his litter.

5. Pheromones to help your cat

If after several days your cat still continues to ignore his bedding, know that there are products spreading artificial pheromones that dissuade him to mark his territory in the house.

When cleaning the cat’s oversights, never use bleach or ammonia, as it is the odor that attracts and stimulates urination. So prefer vinegar or alcohol.
