Pets are a big deal in the UK, with more than 52% of UK households owning one. However, it’s important to remember that taking good care of pets is not easy.

Before buying one, you’ll need to consider your personal finances first, as well as your time and space availability. Not all pets require the same amount of attention and resources, and taking into consideration these factors will make it easier to decide which kind of pet is best suited to your family.

Dogs

Are German Shepherds Good Family Dogs?

Coming out on top is, of course, dogs. Over ten million people, which equates to 34% of UK households, own a dog. The most common dog breed kept as a pet is the Labrador Retriever.

In the UK, 34% of households own a dog.

Many owners treat their pooch as one of the family, admitting that they have their own personality and offer great companionship.

Dogs require regular exercise and training and need your utmost care and attention. The cost of food, toys and pet sitters for when you’re away from home can certainly add up, too.

Cats

It’s been found that 28% of UK households own a cat.

These feline friends can be well-suited as both indoor and outdoor pets, making them suitable for varying circumstances.

Cats come in a range of shapes and sizes, along with differing temperaments depending on their breed. British Shorthairs and Bengal cats are two of the most popular breeds.

Cats offer unconditional love and affection to their owners and are relatively easy to care for. They provide great entertainment and groom themselves regularly, so you won’t have to worry about that!

Birds

lovebirds

With many bird enthusiasts in the UK, these two-legged friends are one of the most popular household pets. They are entertaining, colourful and unique pets that need to be looked after with gentle care.

You can choose from a wide range of standard to exotic bird breeds, including budgies, canaries, cockatiels and parrots. With a little time and patience, you could even teach your bird how to talk!

Rabbits

What Do Rabbits Eat?

Rabbits are one of the most-loved animals and make great starter pets. They are highly intelligent and sociable and come in a variety of breeds, shapes and sizes.

Each rabbit has their own unique character, and they typically live between eight and 12 years. They require a lot of love, care and attention from their owner.

Hamsters

Hamster Habits

There are several different breeds and varieties of hamsters, and they all vary in size and temperament. They don’t require much attention and are happy exercising themselves on their wheel.

Hamsters often made good pets for children, helping them to take ownership and understand the responsibilities of having their own pet. Some of the most popular breeds of hamster include the Syrian hamster and the Russian Dwarf Campbell.
