Looking for a new dog? There are so many dog breeds to choose from and they all have their own distinct personalities! How can you choose the right family dog for you?

You want a dog that’s going to be loyal and friendly. You want to make sure that it won’t destroy your home and that you’ll be able to train it. So what dog is right for you?

Have you considered getting a German shepherd? German shepherds often have a reputation of only being police dogs, but they have qualities that make them great family pets.

Keep reading to learn all about why these loyal family dogs would fit right into your home.

They’re Intelligent

Did you know that German shepherds are in the top three most intelligent dog breeds? They have the intelligence of the average toddler. While this may not seem like much, consider a toddler’s capacity for learning.

This makes these dogs easy to train. They retain information well and they’re able to apply it and solve problems.

You should have a professional trainer for a German shepherd unless you have an assertive personality. While training German shepherds isn’t difficult, they also know when someone isn’t feeling confident in the training process.

They’re Protective

Because they’re popular amongst law enforcement teams, you know that these dogs are protective. This makes them child-friendly (as long as you’ve trained them correctly).

One of the reasons that German shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds for families is that they make fantastic guard dogs. Most people will never need a guard dog for their home, but it’s always a good idea to have that extra protection just in case.

They Like to Play

If you’re looking for a dog who wants to go on runs with you or play in the backyard, German shepherds are right for you.

These dogs have a lot of energy. They need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day (if not more). When they’re puppies, they’ll want to play all day (and it would be best if you can play with them often if you want to avoid ripped-up furniture).

They can keep you safe on long runs through nature trails and play with the kids outside. What’s not to love?

They’re Adaptable

These dogs can adapt to most environments and situations. Because they’re so smart and easy to train, they pick up new information well and they’re able to fit into many environments.

They do well when moving to new homes and welcoming new family members. They’re okay in most weather conditions (though they may get hot if they’re out too much during the summer.

German Shepherds are great all-season dogs.

German Shepherds Are Perfect Family Dogs

When you’re looking for a new pet, why not look at German shepherds in your area? These loyal family dogs are energetic, smart, and protective. They’re great with kids and they’ll never leave your side if they can help it.
