Keep Your Horse Secure

The first step to grooming your horse thoroughly is to secure them. Depending on where your facilities are and your ease of access, this might mean tying your horse or putting them in cross ties.

Your horse should be comfortable and ready to be groomed by the time you’ve fastened them to your station.

You’ll need to gather your supplies to brush your horse carefully and thoroughly.

Use a Curry Comb

When grooming your horse, always start out with a curry comb. Using a circular motion, run the curry comb over your horse’s body to ease out dirt and loose hair.

You can apply pressure while brushing with a curry comb, as this can feel massaging and soothing for your horse. Avoid using this comb on your horse’s face and tread lightly when using it on their legs.

Once you’ve brought out all the dust and hair, it’s time to use a dandy brush.

Run a Dandy Brush Through

Dandy brushes are stiff and meant to release stubborn mud and dirt from your horse’s body.

Using your dandy brush, start at the horse’s neck and move in long, straight strokes down the body towards the hindquarters. Avoid circular motions and harsh pressure, as the dandy brush can be painful for your horse if not used gently and properly.

Repeat this motion until your horse is properly mud-free.

Use a Body Brush Next

After you’ve finished with your dandy brush, a body brush is the next step. Body brushes are known as medium brushes, rendering them less stiff or firm than a dandy brush.

Body brushes are long and dense, meant to eradicate more dirt and rid your horse of grease. When using a body brush, start at the neck and run it along the body of your horse, following the direction of their hair.

Use the body brush on your horse’s legs and remove the grease and dirt in a downward motion. This is the best brush for your horse’s legs.

It’s time to finish with a soft brush.

Finish With a Soft Brush and Detangle the Mane

Soft brushes are dense and filled with soft bristles. These help add polish to your horse’s coat and will be the final step in brushing your horse’s body.

Use your soft brush all of your horse’s body for as long as you’d like in order to achieve the perfect sleek, shiny coat. After you’ve finished, you can detangle and style your horse’s mane and tail.

This includes a tail brush and a soft brushing motion to detangle and smoothen your horse’s mane and tail. Once your horse is groomed, you’re prepared for pole work exercises for horses.
