8 Tips for First Time Dog Owners

You are now a proud dog owner of the most gentle, loving and loyal dog you will ever have! This is a feeling of happiness, but actually a bit of fear. As a brand new dog owner, you actually have no idea what you should pay attention to in order to be able to take care of the dog as well as possible or what you should actually pay attention to.

  • Dog Leash

  • Diet
  • Interaction
  • Be Patient with the Puppy
  • Dogs Take Time
  • Dogs Must Be Socialized

Let’s discuss

Chipping

The first thing you should do as a dog owner is to have a microchip inserted into your dog. Of course, as a dog owner you do your utmost to keep your dog’s collar on, never walk the dog in public, and the only visit fenced dog parks, but the reality of being a pet owner is that things happen that are not always desired. Microchipping is relatively painless for the dog and also gives you as a dog owner more certainty.

Dog Leash

A retractable leash gives your dog a little more reach. The biggest danger here is that they can crack or tear.

A protrusion collar slightly pinches your dog’s neck. This can be one of the reasons that your dog keeps pulling on the dog leash. These types of leashes are controversial, but if your dog needs some extra control, these types of dog leashes can be a good option.

Regardless of the line you use, a harness adds a little extra safety, especially if your dog tends to pull.

A head collar is great for dogs that need guidance with following commands. The teaching dog tricks is easy using a head collar.

The best way to find out which line is most suitable for your dog? Start with the basics and go to other solutions if it feels wrong. Listen and look closely at the dog. What does the dog like and what doesn’t?

Dog Tags

Even if you have chipped your dog and are on a lead, it is still a good idea to have your dog wear a collar with a label at all times. The fastest way to identify a dog that has gone the wrong way is to check its tags, so make sure they are always up to date.

Write down the name of your dog, your telephone number, the city in which you live and possibly an address on the dog tag.

Diet

Wet or dry? Dehydrated? Raw? We all know that eating is important, and when it comes to choosing the right diet for your dog, it becomes a lot more difficult.

Just like people, it is of the utmost importance to know exactly what you eat. Look for ingredients that you know like fish, chicken, beef, oats, sweet potatoes, peas or carrots and make sure you offer your dog a balanced diet. Do you have time to make homemade dog food, just try it out! Just like with humans, dogs will indicate quickly enough whether or not they like the food!

Interaction

To stimulate & hold the other’s attention, it is important to keep him / her interested in you during the activity. If you don’t do that, you will become boring and the other person’s attention will easily shift to something or someone else.

And that is exactly how it works when walking with our dogs. If there is insufficient interaction, your dog will lose its attention & sooner or later draw its own plan.

It is therefore about doing something that arouses his interest very regularly – but certainly at those moments when you risk losing his attention.

Be Patient with the Puppy

Be patient with the puppy. Do not expect your puppy to have learned everything within a short time. This requires a lot of time, attention and patience. Also, be patient with toilet training, this takes longer with one dog than the other.

Dogs Take Time

Dogs take time. One more than the other. There are a number of things that you should take into account when you want to adopt a dog, for example, fur care, walking, puppy training, playing, etc. Also, remember that a puppy cannot be alone for too long.

Dogs Must Be Socialized

A dog needs to be socialized, by getting to know the neighbors and other dogs, all these incentives can prevent your puppy from finding its peace. Give your puppy ‘mandatory’ rest a few times a day.
