How to Take Care of a Hamster

Hamsters are affordable pets that are ideal for people who don’t have much time on their hands. Around 1.5 million U.S. homes currently have a pet hamster and they continue to grow in popularity.

If you’re not familiar with hamsters, then you may be concerned about some of their habits and wonder whether they’re anything to do with the care you’re providing. Here are their most common quirky traits and how to handle them.

Bar Chewing

Bar chewing is an annoying hamster trait. A hamster that does this is telling you that it’s bored. You need to give your hamster some mental and physical stimulation to solve the problem. A hamster wheel and some wooden toys are a great way to keep your hamster happy and healthy.

You could also let your pet run around your home in a hamster ball so that he gets to explore your home further.

Constant Squeaking

A hamster that’s constantly squeaking is rarely a happy one. Hamsters will squeak when they’re unhappy about something, when they’re hungry, and when they’re in pain. It can also be a sign that they’re frightened. As a loving pet owner, this can be upsetting and you may wonder why is my hamster scared of me, but it may not be your fault.

If your hamster has had past trauma, try to avoid triggers. Spend time letting your hamster get to know you and it will gradually start to trust you. Your hamster may even be wary because it needs to get used to living in its new home, which can take a few weeks.

Sleeping All-Day

Hamsters are nocturnal, so they’ll sleep pretty much all day. This means they have an annoying habit of being up all night. Your hamster will most likely want to run in its wheel in the middle of the night, so it’s probably best to keep your hamster away from your bedroom. You’ll still get a chance to see and clean out your hamster during the day, though, as they usually sleep for a few hours, wake up for a while, and do it all over again.
Hamsters are fun and interesting creatures that make great pets. But they do have some unique traits that you should be aware of, so you can provide the best care possible to your furry pet.
