Where do you Purchase a kitten?

Pet Shop

There are several ways you can get a kitten. In many country’s, hardly any kittens are sold in pet stores. If you have found a pet store where this still happens, it is not recommended to purchase these kittens. These are often highly bred and raised under poor conditions.

private person

Regularly there are private individuals who have a cat with a litter of their own. You can purchase a kitten from this, provided it has of course been raised in good conditions. Keep in mind that a kitten is not allowed to leave its mother until it is eight weeks old at the earliest. If this happens before, problems can arise in the development and behavior of the kitten.

Asylum

Another good place to get a kitten is the shelter. These are often full of kittens, of all ages and of all shapes and sizes. Abandoned by their owners, found on the street, or in a container, all these kittens deserve a new home! In general, you pay a small contribution for the kitten at the shelter. You will be dewormed, vaccinated, and often chipped and take it home with you. If you add up the costs for these treatments, you often end up paying more than the price you pay for your kitten at the shelter.

What should you bring home?

Purchases

You can purchase a kitten the following  before you pick up the kitten so that everything is ready when the new resident arrives:

  • basket/pillow to sleep on
  • litter box with filling
  • travel basket
  • scratching post
  • food and drink bowl
  • dry food

Placement

Make sure that the sleeping place, litter box, and food bowls are not too close to each other. A cat may stop eating or go on the litter box when it needs to eat and/or sleep near its toilet.

The arrival

To retrieve

When you go to pick up your kitten, place a soft pillow or blanket in the carrier. As soon as you get home, open the door of the basket, the kitten will come out on its own. This may take a while, but be patient…

Tour

When the kitten is out of his carrier, show him the house. The litter box is especially important, put it here first. He then knows where to relieve himself. Then he can discover the house himself, possibly room by room.

anxious

If the kitten is still a little scared at first, he can hide under a sofa or cupboard. Let him sit there for a while so he can explore the area at his own pace. He may not even come out from under it until at night when no one is around. In any case, make sure that his food and drink are nearby.

Finally

With the right care and attention, the kitten will soon feel completely at home and will be a nice housemate for many years!
