Horse Racing and Animal Welfare

It is often difficult to assess whether an animal is in pain, even for experienced animal owners and veterinarians. Even if the animals are not physically affected, they can be affected by stress and suffer mentally from participating in sports such as horse racing.

If you care about animals, it does not mean that you have to stop betting on sports at betphilly or even stop watching them. As more and more people begin to care about animal welfare, more and more organizations are beginning to take responsibility for how they treat the animals.  

Horse Racing: A sport in change

Torse racing began in the late 19th century, where smaller competitions were organized and horses in agriculture competed against each other. As the years progressed, it became all the more popular as humans realized they could make a profit out of it. Unfortunately, this has resulted in many negative aspects for the participating animals. Today, many horses die on and off the track in the profit-driven industry.

However, it is expected that we will get stricter rules in terms of animal welfare in the next couple of years, and there is an awareness that the sport has problems with these issues and that the current rules are insufficient. Horse racing unfortunately means an enormous amount of suffering for the horses in connection with both training and competition.

During the Olympic Games this year, a trainer was canceled out of the Olympics because he had hit a horse. This event sparked a lot of controversies, but the International Sports Federations rejected that the already existing rules must be changed. However, in November, there will be a congress where the national federations get the opportunity to influence the changes in the sport. So hopefully, animal welfare will be highlighted by 2022.

Horses are individuals with natural behavioral needs that must be met. If not, the horse’s physical and mental health can be affected negatively. It is not in the horses’ interest to be pressured maximum during competition so that we humans can play about money.

However, there is another side of the coin as well. Horse racing is a tradition and therefore it is important to remember that the sport means more to some than others. However, there is a way for horse racing to go hand in hand with animal welfare.

It is the big organizations and countries’ animal welfare associations that bear the greatest responsibility, but you as an individual can also make a change. The most important thing you can do is not to support what you know is animal cruelty. You can also write to organizations and the government and ask them to change the existing rules and laws.
