Is it Normal for Dogs to Stare?

Everyone that has owned a dog has been on the receiving end of a long stare session from their best pal. But those glances may not mean exactly what you think they mean. Our canine companions can make eye contact with us for a variety of different reasons. So if you have come home from a long day at work just to have your dog stare at you, do not fret, it doesn’t always mean that they may have destroyed something while you had your back turned. Below are the reasons why your dog may be staring at you.

Pay Attention To Body Language

Our dogs have no ways to verbalize their feelings in ways we would understand, so we have to pay attention to their body language. Knowing how your pup communicates with you could help you two be better acclimated to each other and as a result, you could form an unbreakable bond that you will cherish for the rest of your life. While body language with a dog can be easy to read and comprehend, the way they look at you could be a little harder to understand.

Walking In Circles Before Lying Down

You may have noticed that your furry friend walks in circles before lying down. Many experts believe that it is an instinctual thing and doesn’t mean much. Others believe it is to check their surroundings before making themselves potentially vulnerable to prey while they get some rest. There also could be something medically wrong with your furry pal. So if they begin to walk around in circles before bed all of a sudden, be sure to communicate this effectively with your veterinarian so they can provide some tips on what could be wrong with your dog.

The Zoomies

There is nothing more hysterical than to watch your dog completely lose it and run around the house so excited that they knock things over without skipping a beat. It almost seems as if the clumsiness is beyond their control in the moment. Those are what most dog owners understand are the zoomies. The zoomies are more scientifically known as the Frenetic Random Activity Periods or FRAP. This happens when your dog has a lot of pent-up energy they need to work off and use that time to do so. Those outbursts mean nothing really and are a normal part of your dog’s genetic makeup.

Why Does Your Dog Stare At You?

You may wonder why your dog stares at you. Eye contact is the most important thing to keep in mind when communicating with your dog. Like paying attention to body language, the eyes will provide a more accurate glimpse of what is going in your dog’s mind.

Those glances however really aren’t as complex as you think they are, it may boil down to a few simple reasons. First, if they are staring at you for a long period of time, it could mean a sign of respect. However, they probably won’t direct eye contact with you for an uncomfortable amount of time considering that is bad in dog manners.

It can get confusing with the long stares though for a couple of reasons. One could be that they are hungry and would like some food. The other reason why is because they want to go outside and use the restroom. So use discretion when forming an opinion on what your dog is trying to communicate.

Dogs are wonderful pets that humans don’t deserve. They love us unconditionally and provide us with comfort and even protection when we need it the most. Learning their communication style and understanding their wants and needs is the least we could do to pay them back for years of their companionship.
